Autumn brings the season on the alpine pastures to a close: between late September and mid-October the cattle return to the valley, and from then on mainly mountain inns and huts serve walkers. Cable cars, gorges and the boats to Salet keep going until mid-October or early November, depending on the weather. And if it rains, the salt mine, the Haus der Berge national park centre and the Watzmann Therme thermal baths make for a good day out.

Lake Königssee in autumn light

The electric boats glide almost silently across the fjord-like lake, up to 192 metres deep, past the Watzmann’s east face, some 1,800 metres high. On the way you hear the famous echo, and at St. Bartholomä the pilgrimage church with its red onion domes, the inn in the former hunting lodge and a national park information point await you. Autumn is noticeably quieter here than high summer.

As a rule, the boats continue to Salet until mid-October (2026: until 11 October); from there it is a 15-minute walk to the Obersee lake. The boat company recommends going to Salet first and stopping at St. Bartholomä on the way back. The See-Gipfel-Ticket combines the boat trip to St. Bartholomä with a return ride on the Jenner cable car.

When the cattle come home

As the Salet and Fischunkel alpine pastures can hardly be reached overland, flat wooden boats known as “Landauer” carry around 30 cows across Lake Königssee in about an hour at the end of the grazing season. According to berchtesgaden.de, no other homecoming in the Alps involves such a boat trip. The animals only receive their headdresses at the landing stage, and only if the summer passed without mishap.

In the Berchtesgaden valley there are deliberately no fixed dates: the cattle drive is a living custom, not an event, and depends on the weather – usually between late September and mid-October, around Michaelmas (29 September). One drive you can plan for is the descent from the Stoißer Alm on the Teisenberg near Teisendorf, which the events calendar lists for Saturday 25 September 2027.

The Kehlsteinhaus on clear autumn days

The ride up to the Kehlsteinhaus (Eagle’s Nest) is an experience in itself: 6.5 km of mountain road with five tunnels and a single hairpin bend, then a 124-metre rock tunnel and a brass-panelled lift. At 1,834 metres the panorama reaches up to 200 km on clear days. A terrace exhibition by the Institute of Contemporary History, included in the ticket, puts the building’s past in context.

Below, the Obersalzberg Documentation Centre gives a factual account of how the site became the Nazi dictatorship’s second seat of power. There is no evening service at the Kehlsteinhaus: in autumn the last bus down leaves in the afternoon, after which the house is closed. For wide views in the late-afternoon light, try the Roßfeld panoramic toll road, open all year (approx. 30 min from the hotel).

Watzmann views from the doorstep

The Kastensteinerwand circular walk follows the Maximiliansreitweg bridleway and the zigzags of the Blitzweg path up to a viewpoint some 150 metres above the valley. From there you look along the valley of the Bischofswieser Ache all the way to the Watzmann. The loop takes just over an hour (4.1 km, 167 m of ascent); a few short, steep sections are slippery when wet.

For plenty of sunshine, follow the Soleleitungsweg, the old brine-pipeline path, which runs almost level along a south-facing slope from Ramsau to Ilsank in Bischofswiesen (5 hrs, 11.3 km). Shorter, but very steep in places, is the climb from Engedey to the Söldenköpfl (2 hrs, 389 m of ascent). The mountain inn at the top has a panoramic terrace and is closed on Mondays and Fridays.

Alpine huts along the Königsweg

The Jenner cable car takes you up to around 1,800 metres. From the top station a short, partly steep path leads in about 25 minutes to the Königsblick viewing platform above Lake Königssee, St. Bartholomä and the Watzmann. From the middle station the almost level Königsweg (“King’s Way”) crosses alpine pastures, home to marmots – known locally as “Mankei” – to the Königsbachalm.

At the Königsbergalm a Sennerin, the resident dairywoman, serves a hearty Brotzeit snack in the Hafnerkaser hut, rebuilt in 2017, and beyond the Priesbergalm stands the gentian still hut of the Grassl distillery. Traditional alpine huts only serve food while the cattle are up there, usually until late September or early October. As a rule, the cable car itself runs until early November.

Ramsau and the Malerwinkel

From the Malerwinkel (“painters’ corner”) you see Ramsau’s best-known view: the parish church of St. Sebastian, built in 1512, with the Ramsauer Ache stream and the Ertlsteg footbridge in front and the Reiter Alm massif behind. In October colourful mountain forest frames the scene, although when the foliage is at its best depends on the weather. The church, with apostle figures from around 1420/30, is open at all times.

Along the Ramsau painters’ trail (Malerweg), easels show the scenes painted by Romantic artists such as Rottmann, Waldmüller, Spitzweg and Richter. The trail leads through the Zauberwald (“enchanted forest”), created by a rockfall some 3,500 years ago, to Lake Hintersee (4 hrs, 10.1 km, 250 m of ascent). At Harvest Festival (2026: 4 October, 8am) the parish walks in procession to the decorated Kunterweg church, provided it is dry.

Spirits from the copper still

In her small distillery in Bischofswiesen, Angelika Scheid, a trained fine-spirits sommelière, distils fruit brandies, spirits, liqueurs and gin. At the heart of it all is a 150-litre copper still called “Edeltraut”. Cherries, pears, apples, plums and rowan berries are among the fruit she uses – and it takes 100 kg of cherries to make five litres of pure alcohol.

On the “Riechen.Schmecken.Genießen” (smell, taste, enjoy) tour with tasting, which lasts approx. 1.5 hrs for 2 to 10 people, you learn the difference between the two classic fruit spirits, Brand and Geist. Rarities include a beer brandy made from the Eisbock of the Hofbrauhaus Berchtesgaden brewery. Opening hours are Tuesdays and Fridays from 4pm to 6pm, otherwise by arrangement; please book ahead.

Above the rooftops of Berchtesgaden

The “Historischer Rundgang” (historic walk) leads from the AlpenCongress conference centre across the Soleleitungssteg, a walkway that clings to the rock above the rooftops, to the Kirchleitn chapel on the Ponnzenzenbichl hill. According to berchtesgaden.de, the chapel with the Watzmann behind it is one of the most photographed scenes in Bavaria. From Locksteinstraße you look out over the whole town to the Watzmann.

The way back leads through Nonntal, Berchtesgaden’s oldest quarter; in total the walk takes 1 hr 30 min for 4.4 km and 88 m of ascent. From Nonntal, the meditation path of the eight Beatitudes also climbs to the chapel. In October and November the loop is especially atmospheric in the evening light – just allow for the early dusk.

Historische Häuserzeile im Nonntal in Berchtesgaden im Herbst

On Fridays from 8am to noon, the weekly market fills the Weihnachtsschützenplatz square with cheese, baked goods, meat and crafts from the region. “Stuck”, a spiced rye bake with currants, cloves and cinnamon, is only sold in the five valley municipalities, from the start of the school year until the first Sunday of Advent. Afterwards, wander into Nonntal, the oldest quarter, or on a rainy day join a guided tour of the Royal Palace (Königliches Schloss).

Grünstein, Kühroint and the Archenkanzel

The Grünstein is the classic lookout mountain between Lake Königssee and the Watzmann, 3 hrs 30 min from the lake (7.5 km, 660 m of ascent); in 2026 the Grünsteinhütte serves Kaiserschmarrn (shredded pancake) until the end of October. Walk on to Kühroint at the foot of the Kleiner Watzmann and, a few minutes further, the Archenkanzel, which looks 750 metres down onto the lake and St. Bartholomä. The Kühroint hut opens depending on the weather (2026: until 4 October, according to berchtesgaden.de).

From the car park on the B 305 road, an old sunken lane climbs through beech woods, then a narrow path rises above the tree line and zigzags through dwarf pines to the hut at 1,450 m. From its sun terrace the view stretches across the Salzach valley to the mountains of the Salzkammergut and the Hoher Göll. According to the hut list, it is open daily until the end of October 2026; the Schellenberg ice cave above stays closed in 2026.

Over 29 bridges and walkways, 320 steps and through a tunnel, the path leads through the roaring gorge at the foot of the Untersberg; at the entrance, Germany’s oldest marble-ball mill has been turning since 1683. Afterwards, Café Zisl in Marktschellenberg tempts with its terrace on the Berchtesgadener Ache and home-made “Schellenberger Kas’kuach’n” cheesecake. The gorge is usually open until the end of October (2026: until 9 Nov.) and is closed when the water is high.

Radstern Nord: a bike loop through the hotel’s village

The easy northern loop of the Berchtesgaden “Radstern” (cycling star) runs from Berchtesgaden via Strub, past the Böcklweiher pond and along the Bischofswieser Ache through Bischofswiesen and Winkl to the Hallthurm watershed. On the way back you ride from the village centre along the scenic Aschauerweiher and Lockstein roads to Berchtesgaden. As the route passes right through Bischofswiesen, you can join it in the village; take care where it crosses the main road and the railway line.

The final stage of the Mozart Cycle Path follows the turquoise Berchtesgadener Ache river via Marktschellenberg and Grödig, finishing along the Hellbrunner Allee into Salzburg’s old town – downhill almost all the way. Grassl gentian distillery in Unterau

Germany’s oldest gentian distillery – founded in 1692, according to berchtesgaden.de – offers a free tour of its stills, an exhibition and a film about the mountain distillers. You can taste over 40 schnapps and liqueurs free of charge, and until the end of October there is an outdoor still-hut museum with a marble run for children. The gentian roots, up to a metre long, are dug by hand; the same plant is only harvested again after 7 to 15 years.

“Guads von Do” and farmers’ markets

Großer Rauher Kopf: a local peak for the sure-footed

This 1,604-metre subsidiary summit of the Untersberg is Bischofswiesen’s own mountain: the village lies at your feet, the Watzmann and Hochkalter rise opposite, and you can see Lake Königssee, the Schlafende Hexe (“Sleeping Witch”) and the Hochstaufen. Beyond the “Blaues Kastl” wayside shrine the path narrows, with fixed ropes, scrambling sections and an exposed spot below the summit. The route is only for sure-footed walkers with a head for heights, and there is nowhere to stop for refreshments at the top.

Around the feast of Saint Rupert, Salzburg celebrates the consecration of its cathedral with a traditional fair and craft market on the Alter Markt, Residenzplatz, Domplatz and Kapitelplatz. The 2027 dates are still to be announced; on bus routes to Salzburg the guest card is only valid with a surcharge.
